SANDY — An arrest warrant has been issued for a Sandy man accused of stabbing his estranged wife multiple times on Valentine's Day.

Lonnie Dalton, 64, was charged Thursday in 3rd District Court with attempted murder and aggravated kidnapping, first-degree felonies.

On Feb. 14, a woman was at her estranged husband's Sandy home when police say they began arguing and she told him to take her home. The woman only lived about 10 minutes away, but after she got into his car, she said he got on the Bacchus Highway and "kept going in circles and going down that highway, like in the middle of nowhere," according to charging documents.

Dalton punched his estranged wife 10 to 15 times in the face while driving, according to the charges.

He then stopped at an unknown location, "retrieved what she believed to be a pocketknife, pulled her out of his vehicle, pushed her down, and stabbed her multiple times in the body and head with the knife," the charges allege. "Dalton stated that they were both going to die that night and that he passed a line he cannot return from."

After the stabbing, Dalton went to a gas station. And that point, the woman got out of the car and ran to the bathroom where she locked herself inside until police arrived, the charges state. She was then taken to a local hospital to be treated for her injuries.

Police believe Dalton fled to Nevada after the attack.
