SALT LAKE CITY — Law enforcement officers hosted 50 children from the Salt Lake City School District Saturday morning and treated them to breakfast and a holiday shopping trip.
Officers and staff from the Salt Lake City Police Department, Utah Transit Authority Police Department and the University of Utah Police Department participated in the event.
"We look forward to this day every year," Salt Lake Police Chief Mike Brown said in a news release. "This program is a perfect example of how compassionate acts can resonate throughout our community to build a culture of care, trust and positivity. Even though we had a short time together, these memories will last a lifetime for the kids, our officers and everyone who participated."
The students and officers were hosted at the Little America Hotel for breakfast, and then the children were escorted downtown in a police motorcade complete with lights and sirens. Upon arriving at Target, they were greeted by Santa and Mrs. Claus and each received a backpack filled with school supplies before perusing down the aisles to fill their carts with holiday gifts.
Funding for the program is collected through donations from the Salt Lake City Police Foundation, Salt Lake police officers and staff, along with community organizations and businesses.
