AMERICAN FORK — A man was hit and killed after exiting his vehicle following a collision on southbound I-15 in American Fork Monday, troopers said.
Troopers arrived at the scene around 7 a.m. Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Cam Roden said a passenger car collided with the right barrier near the southbound exit to 500 East. The driver then exited the vehicle and walked back toward traffic.
"For a reason we are trying to determine," the man then walked in front of traffic and was struck by another vehicle, Roden said.
A statement from the Utah Department of Public Safety on Monday afternoon said based on witness statements, the man was hit by two or three vehicles. "It is unknown why the vehicle initially crashed or why the subject walked into traffic," the statement said.
The man, who has not been identified, suffered fatal injuries, though nobody in the other car was injured, he said.
Investigators said a passenger from the first car left the scene but was later located by troopers, and taken into custody. "It was discovered that he had several warrants and was unwilling to answer any questions about the crash or his involvement," the Department of Public Safety said.
The five right lanes of southbound traffic were closed following the accident, but reopened as of noon Monday.
