PRICE — An alleged suicidal man who led police on a chase on U.S. 6 was arrested at gunpoint after all four tires were successfully spiked.
Sunday night, police were on the lookout for a 48-year-old man heading east on U.S. 6. The person who reported the man to law enforcers claimed he "had taken a handful of pills and was driving at a high rate of speed" and that he "had stated that he wanted to die and was not going to stop for law enforcement," a police booking affidavit states.
The vehicle was first spotted by a Utah Division of Wildlife officer who followed the man for several miles. A Utah Highway Patrol trooper later joined in and attempted to pull the man over. When he didn't pull over, a chase ensued, the affidavit states.
The short chase reached speeds over 116 mph, according to the trooper. Multiple agencies were involved in bringing the pursuit to an end.
"Several successful spike attempts were completed and the vehicle came to a stop (near Price) after all four tires came off of the vehicle. (The driver) was called out of the vehicle at gunpoint and cooperated with commands," the affidavit states.
The man was booked into the Carbon County Jail for investigation of failing to stop at the command of police, reckless driving and not having insurance.
