REPORTING TO MINI CAMP — Late July means NFL players around the country are reporting to training camps and organized team activities in preparation for another season, and some are in better shape than others.
After what he described as an "awful" and "sluggish" 2022 season, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel was determined to be in the best shape of his life by Day 1.
He proved it to head coach Kyle Shanahan's camera roll.
"Never has a grown man sent me so many pictures with his shirt off," Shanahan told reporters Tuesday, eliciting a roar of chuckles. "But it looks good. I can tell he's put the work in."
Samuel caught 56 passes for 632 yards and two touchdowns in 2022, or 11.3 yards per reception — down from the unconscious 18.2 yards per reception of 2021, when he totaled 1,405 yards on 77 receptions with six touchdowns en route to first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors.
While Shanahan believes Samuel didn't have "to be harsh on himself to you guys" (the media), he appreciated the humility and the recognition to try to be better — or more like his 2021 self.

"Deebo's one of the best players in this league," Shanahan said. "Any time he doesn't play like one of the best players in this league, everybody is going to be disappointed — including himself. I think that was the case. It's a fine line to say that he was 'awful,' just because he wasn't one of the best players in the league. I think he was disappointed. I think he can get back to playing a little bit more like he did in 2021.
"Deebo's in a really good spot, and I'm really excited for Deebo this year," he added.
