FLOP LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City spectators got one of the first looks at the new in-game flopping penalty being tested by the NBA during summer league games on Wednesday at the Delta Center.
During the Oklahoma City-Memphis game, Thunder guard Jaden Shackelford was assessed a technical foul by an official after reacting to an apparent shot to the face by Memphis guard Jake LaRavia.
NBA Communications announced this week that a proposed "in-game flopping penalty" will be in effect on a provisional basis for all 2023 NBA summer leagues.
An updated version of the proposed In-Game Flopping Penalty is below.

Please note: Rather than the opposing team always getting possession after a flop, the league's resumption of play rules will apply. https://t.co/8GUf4X54mzpic.twitter.com/9j8ufm3qWN
The rule states that the player who commits the flop will be assessed a non-unsportsmanlike technical foul, which does not count as a personal foul or lead to ejection, and the opposing team will be awarded one free throw.
Officials are not required to stop play to assess the foul and can wait until the next dead ball situation.
