MIDVALE — A Midvale man already on probation for assaulting his girlfriend is now charged with slitting his mother's throat, causing near-fatal injuries.
Alec Paul Davis, who turns 27 on Thursday, was charged Wednesday in 3rd District Court with attempted aggravated murder, a first-degree felony; and possession of a weapon by a restricted person, a third-degree felony.
On June 18, Unified police received a 911 call from a woman who could not talk and was struggling to breathe, according to police. When officers arrived at her house near 600 East and 6800 South, a neighbor said she "had heard screaming and yelling from the residence and saw a male, she believed to be the resident's son, Alec Paul Davis, leave in a vehicle," charging documents state.
Officers entered the residence and immediately "observed an extreme amount of blood throughout the hallway, bedrooms, and bathroom," the charges state. The 53-year-old mother was found on a bed covered in blood from "a very large laceration to her throat and multiple lacerations on her legs, at least one laceration cut to the bone," according to the charges.
The mother underwent successful surgery but "was unable to speak as her trachea and vocal cords had been severed," the charges state. When a detective asked "if her son is the one who assaulted her, (she) nodded her head up and down to indicate it was."
On June 19, Davis was found back at his mother's residence that he shared with her and was taken into custody. When questioned about what had happened, Davis allegedly said that "he took what he thought was methamphetamine, but his body reacted strangely to it, and he became very angry. Davis said he and his mother began arguing, but he couldn't remember what the argument was about."
The argument turned physical and Davis stomped on his mother's head before grabbing a razor from the bathroom and slashing her multiple times, according to the charges.
Court records state that Davis was convicted of aggravated assault in April 2022 in a domestic violence case against another woman and sentenced to two years of probation. On June 8, however, Adult Probation and Parole agents filed a progress report saying Davis was failing to abide by the terms of his probation by not following through on court-ordered treatment for domestic violence.
Prosecutors are requesting that Davis be held in the Salt Lake County Jail pending trial.
"(He) has clearly demonstrated by his behavior that he is a danger to the victim and the community as demonstrated by his unpredictable and volatile behavior. Moreover, given that he engaged in these horrific acts while he was already on felony probation further demonstrates by clear and convincing evidence that lesser forms of restraint are not feasible," the charges state.
