SALT LAKE CITY — An argument between two friends culminated with one man fatally stabbing the other in the chest, police say.
Todd Jonathan Kingston, 53, was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of murder and obstruction of justice. He is accused of stabbing 40-year-old Cody Myers.
About 5:40 p.m. Thursday, Salt Lake police were called to the east parking lot of the Glendale Golf Course, 1875 S. Redwood, on a report of a stabbing. They arrived to find Myers on the ground.
"The victim was transported to the hospital where he subsequently died as a result of the stabbing to his chest," according to a police booking affidavit.
A witness who had called 911 told officers that the suspect was a man who went by the moniker "Diablo." About 15 minutes after talking to the witness, patrol officers spotted Diablo, later confirmed to be Kingston, on the Jordan River trail near 1800 South, and took him into custody, the affidavit states.
The witness, who lives in a nearby homeless camp, told police Kingston lives in a friend's backyard. He said Myers pulled into the parking lot and that "Diablo and the victim were friends and they were both sitting in the victim's car" in that lot.
"The victim was in the driver's seat and Diablo was sitting in the passenger seat of the vehicle. The witness left the area of the camp and went to a nearby gas station. Approximately 15 minutes later, the witness returned to the camp and noticed the victim and Diablo were now verbally arguing while standing outside of the vehicle," the affidavit states.
Myers then got back into his vehicle, but two minutes later exited again and started walking toward Kingston, apparently with the intent to fight Kingston, according to the witness.
"The witness reports the victim was not armed at this point. The victim then got closer to Diablo when Diablo used a large knife and stabbed the victim in the left chest area," the affidavit alleges.
Police have not released a possible motive for the stabbing or what the two men were arguing about.
