SALT LAKE CITY — The Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America announced Tuesday that it raised more than $1.7 million during the 1,500-mile ride through southern Utah and Nevada earlier this month.

The funds will benefit Victory Junction, a camp for children with chronic illnesses in North Carolina.

"We had a phenomenal ride," Petty, a former NASCAR driver and racing analyst, said. "But I knew all along that Nevada and Utah would not disappoint. These are two of the most beautiful states to ride motorcycles in. Everywhere we stopped, we were greeted with open arms from fans near and far."

The ride started and ended in Salt Lake City. Utah state Sen. Don Ipson, R-St. George, was one of this year's participants, along with former NASCAR drivers Richard Petty, Kenny Wallace and Ken Schrader, and former NFL star and U.S. Senate candidate Herschel Walker.
