SALT LAKE CITY — One of two men wanted in connection with a fatal stabbing in Salt Lake City has been arrested.

Ivy Chase Grant, 26, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of obstructing justice.

Charles Alires, 34, was stabbed three times during a fight on Thursday about 3:45 p.m. at the Palmer Court Apartments, 999 S. Main, according to Salt Lake City police. Officers arrived to find Alires in critical condition. He died at the scene despite life-saving efforts from police and fire crews. Detectives do not believe the fatal attack was random.

On Friday, police announced they were looking for Taddy Avalon Jackman, 43, and Grant.

"Please call 911 immediately, if located. People with general information about either Jackman or Grant should call 801-799-3000," police said.

According to Salt Lake police, Grant was located Friday night by members of the department's SWAT Team and Violent Criminal Apprehension Team near 300 East Kensington Avenue. When questioned by detectives, however, Grant claimed "he was not in a fight at Palmer Court" and further stated "he had never been at Palmer Court anytime in the past," even though police have collected surveillance video "clearly showing him and the other participants," according to a police booking affidavit.

"Detectives believe Grant has been lying about his involvement in the fight that led to the death of Alires. Furthermore, detectives are concerned that if released, Grant may help Jackman further his fugitive status," police stated on Saturday.

Witnesses told investigators that Grant and Jackman are good friends, according to the affidavit.

"(Grant) is clearly not being honest about being at Palmer Court and his involvement in the fight that ultimately led to the stabbing death of the victim," the affidavit states. "(He) is clearly obstructing this homicide investigation by lying about his involvement."

Jackman is a former Public Enemy No. 1 who was arrested in connection with the shootings of three people in 2003 and later convicted on federal weapons charges. Grant made headlines in 2019 for getting into a scuffle at a modest dress shop. He was convicted in that case of making a terroristic threat and in October was placed on three years of probation.
