LAYTON — Trucks haven't changed all that much over the past 130 years. Yes, there might be bigger engines or more wheels on some of them. But the general design of a truck from the 1890s more or less resembles the modern versions, with a cab up front and space in the back to haul loads.

Which is what makes this video so bizarre. A man in Layton (which I believe is pronounced "Lay-uhn") saw three of these cab-less trucks rumbling down the street in the dead of night.

Yes, I can see why the man was so confused. The truck looks like something from a Terminator movie.

"Saw this crazy thing the other night in Layton off Gentile Street," explained Matt Seal in an email to me. "Looked like an unmanned semi driving down the road. Totally creepy."

Matt posted the video to a Facebook group run by the Utah Department of Transportation, hoping to learn more about the perplexing vehicle. And he got a response that put his mind at ease. Apparently, it's not part of a robot invasion.

"Aliens? Headless horseman? Zombies? Just kidding, these trucks are bringing in the large beams for the future Gentile bridge," explains the comment posted by UDOT. "It's basically a really long go-kart."

I did a little digging, and it turns out that these trucks really are like "really long go-karts." They have human drivers who sit down low so the extra-long loads don't hit into their cab as they turn corners.

You learn something new every day.
