ST. GEORGE — Taylor Knibb won the women's Ironman 70.3 World Championship on Friday, crossing the finish line in 4 hours, 3 minutes and 20 seconds.

The 24-year-old Knibb, who is from Washington, D.C., finished more than five minutes ahead of runner-up Paula Findlay of Canada, who finished in 4:08.57. Crossing the finish line a couple minutes later was third-place finisher Emma Pallant-Browne of Great Britain, who posted a time of 4:10:45.

Knibb, who placed third in the 70.3 World Championship race staged in St. George last September, was the third swimmer to exit the 65-degree waters of Sand Hollow Reservoir on Friday morning, completing the 1.2-mile swim in a time of 23:54, just a few seconds behind last year's champion Lucy Charles-Barclay of Great Britain and Lotte Wilms of the Netherlands.

It was during the middle segment, the 56-mile bike ride, that Knibb was able to open a several-minute lead over her closest competitors.
