PAGE, Ariz. — A small plane plunged into Lake Powell on the Arizona-Utah state line on Saturday, killing two people and injuring five, authorities said Monday.
The pilot of the single-engine plane reported an engine problem late Saturday afternoon before the Cessna 207 went down in Lake Powell near Face Canyon, Federal Aviation Administration officials said in a statement.
The tour plane from Page, Arizona, had six French tourists and a pilot aboard, according to a Kane County Sheriff's Office statement Monday. With the help of bystanders, the pilot and four other passengers were able to get out of the plane and onto boats.
When they arrived on shore, three people were taken to a St. George hospital in medical helicopters with serious injuries. Two others were taken to a hospital in Page.
"Unfortunately, two of the passengers died and remained in the submerged plane," the sheriff's office statement said. The plane was located about 120 feet under water and the bodies will later be recovered by divers.
The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the cause of the crash, according to the FAA.
The people who died and were injured were not immediately identified on Monday.
