TAYLORSVILLE — Taylorsville police have arrested one man in connection with a shootout between two groups at an apartment complex Wednesday night that resulted in two men being shot in their legs.
Francisco Javier Estrada, 20, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of two counts of shooting at a person, possession of a firearm by a restricted person and obstructing justice.
About 7 p.m. Wednesday, police were called to the Atherton Park Apartments, 4545 S. Atherton Drive, where multiple people reported that several men were shooting at each other.
"A preliminary investigation indicates that a group of men were outside the apartments when another man showed up, and several people exchanged gunfire. Two men in the group chased the other man, firing bullets at him," Taylorsville police stated.
Initially, police thought Estrada was only a witness. But after talking with others who were present, as well as reviewing surveillance video, investigators learned he was one of the shooters and was arrested, according to a police booking affidavit.
"Witnesses observed Estrada and (his friend) provide their firearms to an unidentified party prior to officers' arrival to the scene. Estrada claims that he did not know the person whom he and his friend provided the firearms to," the affidavit states.
Police say they have identified others involved in the shooting and were looking for those people Friday. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 801-963-5400.
