YOUR KITCHEN — What's in your junk drawer?

If it includes a used deodorant with no lid, a screwdriver, the last bag of popcorn, or a sippy cup lid that has no use other than to remind you that you once had toddlers, you're in good company.

In this video, Jody Carroll, of northern Idaho, walks us through her step-by-step junk drawer organizing tutorial that will leave you wanting more.

"Everyone has one: a junk drawer," Jody says. "And it's a challenging but rewarding job to clean it all out and organize your odds and ends."

As a mom of nine children, I'd be lying if I said I had just one junk drawer. Even so, just like Jody, I like to start out my drawer excavating adventures with an all-things-dairy snack and Sammy Hagar screaming sweet hairband originals in my ears.

But enough with the food and entertainment. What we're all here for are the cleaning tips, and boy, did Jody deliver.

Who doesn't begin with emptying everything out on the small counter space above the drawer to sort junk from "mementos?" And, like Jody, I often find myself repurposing old drawer organizers because who has time to go buy new ones? Especially when junk-drawer cleaning is usually something not planned, and totally done out of pure "I need to do it now-ness."

Throughout the video, Jody demonstrates the efficient organization of misfit items by color and texture. She put items such as reading glasses, used deodorant and a bag of popcorn together because of their smooth textures. She also put items with sharp or rough edges such as scissors, screwdrivers and large screws in one section of the drawer organizer.

Her knack for organizing really shows, and I loved how Jody defies the word "junk" by not throwing away a single thing.

Who doesn't need an empty Advil container with no lid or an empty chapstick box? Rainy days do come, and you never really know when you're going to need to have quick access to these items.

"Your finished product will have symmetry and order, and all your tools and trinkets have a home," Jody said.

And isn't that what it's all about? Giving everything a proper home – yes, even inside the junk drawer.
