NORWAY — There has never been a documented case of an orca attacking a human in the wild. While that fact brings some reassurance, it's hard to ignore the size and power of these apex predators. They could certainly harm us if they wished, and some past interactions have gotten undeniably rough.
For example, there's a group of orcas that apparently think it's fun to destroy sailboats off the coasts of Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Perhaps you've heard. These rowdy whales usually target the boat's rudders, leading to multiple sinkings.
So would you snorkel with orcas? The fellow in this video had no problem hopping in the water with them.
This encounter took place in Norway. As the snorkeler observed the orcas below, a pair of humpback whales suddenly burst into view. What a shock! Humpbacks can exceed 50 feet in length and are one of the biggest whales in existence.
While the sight of these massive whales bursting into view must've been astounding, the snorkeler can take comfort knowing that, as with orcas, humpbacks have never attacked a human.
