PARK CITY — Utah-based Kodiak had been selling its packaged, whole wheat pancake mix for years, even winning some shelf space in Target. While it was well-received, the company struggled to find real financial success.
That all changed in April 2014. Following an appearance on "Shark Tank," sales began to take off. Then, two months later, the company launched a mix with 14 grams of protein. Sales skyrocketed.
Today, the brand has expanded to other breakfast categories, including granola, frozen, er, hibernating waffles and most recently overnight oats. Each product includes that signature ingredient.
"We are the company with high protein and whole grains," said Sonali Dalvi, vice president and head of research and development for Kodiak. "We pick high quality ingredients, whole grains, real fruits and real ingredients."
Kodiak has long been a favorite of athletes and health-conscious consumers, including moms "really eager to get their kids to eat something incredibly nutritious, protein packed, whole grain, real ingredients," said CEO Valerie Oswalt.
Oswalt took over the helm of Kodiak in 2022, and she has big plans for the Park City company.
"I think one of our greatest goals is to become the most loved next-generation food brand. And it may sound lofty … but I can see Kodiak being one of the biggest brands in the future."
In our Beyond Business series, Oswalt talks about how the company is helping consumers eat better and what you don't want to miss on the 100% whole grain menu.
"You're going to love it," she said.
