SALT LAKE CITY — A man accused of stabbing another man in Salt Lake City, briefly kidnapping his girlfriend and then fleeing to Oregon, where he was arrested, has been extradited back to Utah.
Salt Lake City police on Wednesday announced that Daniel Duane Etherington II, 46, of Clinton, has been booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.
On Feb. 4, Etherington went to an apartment near 1450 S. West Temple and knocked on the door of a unit belonging to a woman he had gone on a date with eight months earlier. When the woman opened the door, he grabbed her by the hair and said "I am taking you to kill you," court documents state.
Just as this was happening, the woman's boyfriend arrived at the apartment. When he tried to help her, Etherington pulled out a knife and stabbed the man multiple times, according to charging documents. The man survived his injuries. Etherington was charged in 3rd District Court with aggravated kidnapping, a first-degree felony, and aggravated assault, a second-degree felony.
Police were able to track Etherington to Oregon several hours after the stabbing. He was spotted on I-84 near La Grande, between Baker City and Pendleton, by Oregon State Police and arrested following a chase.
Etherington's long criminal history includes an arrest in 2009 when police say he made terroristic threats at Salt Lake Community College. Formal charges in that case were ultimately not filed. In October, Etherington was arrested and accused of stabbing a dog to death. He was charged with aggravated cruelty to an animal, but the case was dismissed when prosecutors were unable to proceed with the case, according to court documents.
In 2004, Etherington was sentenced to a term of one to 15 years at the Utah State Prison for a conviction of robbery, according to court records.
