KEARNS — An infant was killed and a driver is in critical condition following a car crash in Kearns early Monday.

A vehicle rear-ended another car at 4100 W. 5415 South about 1:30 a.m., Unified Police Sgt. Aymee Race said. Initially, the crash was called in as a hit-and-run because someone had fled the scene, but that person later returned, Race said.

The driver of the car that got rear-ended was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

An infant in the other car was injured and taken in critical condition to the hospital, along with his or her 17-year-old mother, Race said. The child, however, died from injuries at the hospital. The driver of the car with the mom and child was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening.

The road was closed until about 6 a.m. While the crash remains under investigation, Race said excessive speed is believed to have been a factor.
