Update:The Salt Lake District Attorney's Office decided not to press charges against Etherington in this particular case.

The District Attorney's office determined the threats made by Etherington did not reach the terroristic level.

SALT LAKE CITY -- A Salt Lake Community College student could face charges for threatening the college's staff. The suspect has a long criminal history.

Police arrested Daniel Etherington, 34, on Monday for allegedly making terroristic threats to employees at Salt Lake Community College.

Utah Highway Patrol troopers say Etherington told college administrators that he "knows how to use guns." UHP told the Deseret News Etherington apparently felt like he's been treated unfairly at the school.

The district attorney's office will screen the case, possibly this week. Etherington posted bail and has been released from the Salt Lake County Jail.

According to jail records, Etherington's criminal past began in 1995 and includes the following:

  • 1995: Arrested for domestic assault, domestic discharge of a firearm.
  • 1996: Arrested for terroristic threats, assault, disorderly conduct, and trespassing.
  • 1999: Arrested for aggravated assault on a police officer, reckless driving and fleeing from police, both in a vehicle and on foot.
  • 2004: Allegedly pulled a gun at a Barnes & Noble bookstore near Fashion Place Mall.
  • 2004: Charged with violating a protective order, failure to stop at an accident, and driving on a suspended license.
