Jed Boal ReportingPeople with mental health or substance abuse problems often don't know where to turn for help, or they're too embarrassed to ask. Now there's a website that helps Utahns find statewide resources.

Many of us turn to the Internet first when looking for answers, help and services. The Utah Behavioral Healthcare Network today launched a website for mental health and substance abuse issues.

Mental health and substance abuse account for a lot of suffering in our communities, that's compounded by stigma and embarrassment when it comes to dealing with these problems head-on.

Robert Greenberg, Chair, Utah Behavioral Healthcare Network: "Today we're striking a major blow against that ignorance and embarrassment."

People who suffer from these illnesses can access the network of care. They can find the right service to educate themselves about their issues and take control of their own recovery. The Utah Network of Care website empowers people in all counties to get help.

Robert Greenberg: "Mental illness and substance abuse disorders are the leading cuase of disability in the United States."

People can find services and read the latest research and articles about everything from Anorexia to methamphetamine abuse, schizophrenia to depression. It enables Utahns to manage their own care and eliminate one of the biggest roadblocks.

Sherri Wittwer, Executive Director, NAMI-Utah: "Simply knowing how to navigate the system, where to start, how to start that process. Because of the stigma of mental illness, we don't speak about this a freely as we should."

Public resources for behavioral healthcare are stretched in the state, but those with greatest needs will get help, but there are also private services available.
