No more COVID-19 updates on weekends, Utah health department says

SALT LAKE CITY — Starting Saturday, the Utah Department of Health will no longer be providing daily COVID-19 case count updates on weekend days.

Daily updates will only be provided on official business days moving forward, the health department said. Monday is an observed holiday for the Fourth of July weekend, so that means the next COVID-19 cases report is expected on Tuesday.

Sunday, June 27: 282 new cases, 8 deaths, 5,759 vaccinations
Monday, June 28: 254 new cases, 2 deaths, 2,722 vaccinations
Tuesday, June 29: 361 new cases, 3 deaths, 4,519 vaccinations
Wednesday, June 30: 574 new cases, 3 deaths, 8,189 vaccinations
Thursday, July 1: 540 new cases, 4 deaths, 5,976 vaccinations
Friday, July 2: 431 new cases, 3 deaths, 5,726 vaccinations

Utah is in the middle of another COVID-19 surge driven by the spread of the highly contagious delta variant among unvaccinated people.

Cases are expected to continue to spike during and after the July 4 holiday weekend, Utah Department of Health deputy director Dr. Michelle Hofmann said Thursday during a news conference. Utah has endured COVID-19 spikes after holidays throughout the pandemic.

"We're in a surge," Hofmann said. "Any of the gatherings that we've done historically, where we've seen a surge, are expected to increase cases."
