WENDOVER — One person is dead and another is in critical condition after a rollover crash several miles east of the Bonneville Salt Flats, authorities say.

At approximately 6:20 a.m. on Sunday, a car with two male occupants in their twenties was traveling eastbound on I-80, the Department of Public Safety said.

The car swerved for an unknown reason and the driver overcorrected, Utah Highway Patrol trooper Andrew Battenfield told KSL.com.

The car rolled multiple times on the right-hand shoulder of the road approximately 7 miles east of Wendover, he said.

Battenfield said both of the car's occupants were ejected. The department stated that neither of the men appeared to have been wearing a seat belt.

A Utah Highway Patrol trooper arrived shortly after the crash and attempted life-saving measures until medical help arrived on scene, the department said.

One man died at the scene, and the other was transported via air ambulance to a hospital in poor condition.

The number two lane was closed on Sunday morning while Utah Highway Patrol conducted an investigation of the scene. Troopers are investigating if impairment was a factor, but the cause of the crash is unknown.

The identities of the victims were not immediately available.
