THE BACKYARD — Winter brings all sorts of athletic activities into play.

Skiing, sledding, ice skating, and simply catching snowflakes on our tongue are all things you can only do when the cold and snow are in your favor.

It's also a time of great glee for many dogs. The excitement of snow can lead to things, like zoomies all over the yard and burying a nose into a drift to fling the snow skyward. It's hard not to smile when watching a dog that loves the snow.

One dog in an unknown cold locale has found a new cold-friendly sport — deck sliding.

All you need is a wooden deck and just the right height that's also covered with that slick kind of ice that no one can avoid slipping on.

This featured video shows Fido running toward just that type of deck at full speed, and leaping up to land on the top. And then the magic happens (you'll have to watch the video to see the magic).

It's hard to tell if this stunt is a practiced move or if the dog just has amazing reflexes. Either way, it looks hecka fun. Plus, it certainly tickles the funny bone. Well, at least the dog's owner can't help but wheeze-giggle as he films his pup's new trick.

The moral of the story: When the going gets ruff, the ruff get going (sorry, but not sorry).
