SALT LAKE CITY — A Bountiful man was recently arrested twice in Hawaii for allegedly breaking COVID-19 quarantine rules two separate times, police said.
David Barnes, 50, was arrested on Dec. 28 and again on Jan. 5 for investigation of violating Hawaii's emergency rules, which require people arriving in the state to quarantine for 10 days at an approved location, according to a news release from the Kauai Police Department.
Barnes arrived at the Lihue Airport on Kauai on Dec. 28 and was told to quarantine, the release said. He did not have accommodations confirmed when he arrived, so he was asked to make arrangements at the airport and was allowed to leave after confirming a reservation at a nearby hotel.
However, he left the airport on foot and went to Costco to shop instead of quarantining at the hotel, the release alleges. Barnes was arrested later that day but was released on $1,000 bail, according to the release.
When Barnes was released, he checked into another hotel. But he was arrested again on Jan. 5 for investigation of three counts of violating the COVID-19 quarantine rules and one count of simple trespass, police said.
Barnes is currently being held at the Kaua'i Community Correction Center on $11,000 bail, according to police.
Barnes posted extensively on TikTok about his experiences in Hawaii over the past several weeks. A Dec. 31 post shows him in the back of a police car describing the previous several days he spent in jail. He also insults the police officer who arrested him.
Another Dec. 31 post shows him checking into the second hotel after his first arrest, where he acknowledges he is not allowed to leave for at least seven days. However, a Jan. 5 post shows him taking a nighttime walk outside the hotel and patronizing some nearby bars.
"Someone should really call the cops," Barnes jokes in the caption.
In the post, Barnes also criticizes Hawaii's quarantine rules, claiming they are "not based in science."
Another TikTok post on Jan. 2 shows a woman delivering Costco items to Barnes's hotel room where he was instructed to quarantine.
"Costco has great stuff," the caption reads. "I just wish they had asked me about my situation and not just called the cops and had me arrested."
