SANDY — The Macy's location at The Shops at South Town is one of dozens the retail giant will close this year, according to reports released this week.
The closure will leave Utah with two Macy's locations: one at City Creek Center and the other at Fashion Place mall.
The Sandy store's closure was confirmed this week by both CNBC and USA Today, who added that the location will close "mid-year." A South Town Macy's employee told KSL.com on Friday she doesn't know yet exactly when the store will close.
Macy's announced in early 2020 that it plans to shutter 125 underperforming stores by 2023; the South Town location is one of 45 stores the brand plans to close this year.
While retail was already struggling through the rise of online shopping and the decline of mall traffic, the coronavirus pandemic slowed sales even more in 2020, which led to the company cutting back on its number of locations nationwide.
Macy's did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday afternoon.
