SALT LAKE CITY — 2021 brings new hope, new things to hopefully look forward to, and — for us sports fans — a new year that maybe our favorite team(s) will actually win.
I'm a Dallas Cowboys fan, so I've been waiting now a quarter of a century just for them just to get to an NFC Championship game, let alone go to the Super Bowl and win it. Sadly, I have a feeling I'll be waiting a bit longer.
Sports is a fun distraction from all the madness that we hear about on the news each day. Music is another thing that takes our minds away from the drama of the world.
So why not combine the two by listening to the most iconic sports TV themes on arguably the most beautiful musical instrument: the piano. Sports TV themes bring nostalgia, at times, and excitement of the anticipation of whichever game you're about to tune into.
In this video, young pianist Max Cooper plays a medley of all the major sports TV themes. From his YouTube video library, Cooper has been playing the piano since he was a kindergartener and has done many other songs and medleys.
Cooper starts off with college sports themes (I love the NCAA on CBS theme). He then hits us with the SportsCenter "DaDaDa, DaDaDa."
Up next is the NFL, and we get the NFL on CBS, Sunday Night Football on NBC, ESPN's Monday Night Football, and arguably the best TV sports theme: the NFL on FOX theme.
Basketball follows, with Cooper playing the NBA on ESPN, NBA on NBC (90s kids unite) and the NBA on TNT theme. Every time I hear the latter, I can't help but think of Charles Barkley talking smack to Kenny "The Jet" Smith or Shaquille O'Neal on "Inside The NBA."
We then get the MLB on FOX and the NHL on NBC theme, which I think is a very underrated sports theme.
Lastly, we end with arguably the most majestic TV sports theme of them all: the Masters theme. All we need to hear is Jim Nantz say, "Hello, friends. Welcome to Augusta."
Thank you, Max, for homage to sports and our love of watching it on TV!
May all you and your sports teams be successful in 2021! I think I speak for all Utahns when I say: Go Jazz!
