CLINTON — One person is dead after a detached garage caught on fire early Sunday morning, according to the Clinton City Fire Department.

According to Clinton City Fire Chief David Olsen, dispatchers received a call around 2:50 a.m. Sunday morning reporting that a shed at 2216 W. 1300 North was on fire. Several fire crews arrived within 6 minutes to find more of a detached garage than a shed on fire.

Initial reports from the homeowners indicated that someone may be inside, but the person was reported to be homeless with no way to verify where they were, according to Olsen.

The garage was filled with a large number of items, which prevented fire crews from accessing the inside of the structure as well as preventing them from fighting the fire, Olsen said.

Fire crews contacted the public works department and were able to use tractors to pull items out of the garage, getting the fire under control in about an hour.

Once crews were able to access the inside of the garage they discovered a body, according to officials.

"We believe we know who this individual is, but we're still waiting for the medical examiner's office to verify a positive ID on the person," said Olsen.

The cause of the fire has not been determined. According to Clinton fire officials, the Utah State Fire Marshall Office will help conduct an investigation into the fire.
