PAYSON — Police used less-than-lethal force to take into custody a man who they say was extremely intoxicated and illegally shooting multiple guns — and pointed a rifle at officers.
Kaler Craig Hone, 26, of Payson, was booked into the Utah County Jail about 7 p.m. Wednesday for investigation of two counts of aggravated assault, carrying a weapon while under the influence, two counts of illegal discharge of a firearm, and intoxication.
The incident began when Payson police received a call of Hone "being intoxicated (and) shooting a firearm in his backyard inside city limits," according to a police affidavit.
A woman who called 911 said she had just broken up with Hone and went to his house to collect some of her belongings. When she got there, she told police she discovered that Hone was "highly intoxicated."
Hone, who was upset, grabbed a shotgun and began waving it around and aimed it at the woman, the affidavit states. He then grabbed a .22 LR revolver, walked outside and began firing it, according to police.
The woman told officers "that after he shot the .22 revolver, he grabbed a .223 AR-15 and began firing it outside the residence. At that point (the woman's) brother called 911 to report the incident. (She) informed me that Kaler said that if he saw a cop he would shoot them," the affidavit states.
By the time police arrived on scene, they said Hone had barricaded himself inside the house and turned off all the lights, and the ex-girlfriend and her brother were waiting at the end of the street. Police used the loudspeaker from their patrol cars to call out to Hone.
"After a few minutes attempting to contact Kaler he opened the front door. As Kaler walked out the front door, he had a rifle in his hand and was pointing it forward toward officers. An officer fired a less-lethal bean bag gun. The bean bag struck Kaler two times, once in the right arm and another in the right hip area," according to the affidavit.
Hone was knocked to the ground, then got up and went back inside the house. When police ordered him to come back out with his hands up, he complied.
When asked by police if he had been drinking, Hone said he "probably had 10 shots" of vodka, the affidavit states. Officers conducted a portable breath test on Hone and said it registered at 0.377%, which is over seven times the legal limit for driving.
