No new deaths reported Sunday in Utah

In its daily release of the latest coronavirus figures, the Utah Department of Health is reporting Sunday that an additional 331 tests have returned positive.With the update, Utah has now had 46,652 confirmed cases of COVID-19. No new deaths were reported Sunday, leaving the state's toll at 363 Utahns lost to the disease.The health department says 3,626 more Utahns have been tested over Saturday's numbers; the rolling seven-day average of positive tests over the past week is now 9.5%, and the rolling seven-day average number of daily cases during that same time is 357.— Graham Dudley, KSL.com

Dixie State launches program for those affected by COVID-19

In response to the economical impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dixie State University has launched a certificate program that will train people for jobs that are in high demand.The DSU CARES program, funded by the coronavirus relief bill, was developed to assist local residents whose employment has been affected by COVID-19. In order to qualify for this program, a person must have both completed high school (or the equivalent) and been recently furloughed, laid-off or underemployed due to the pandemic.The program offers a number of certificate programs in business, technology and health care at a significant discount – courses are just $20 per credit, which is a 90% savings off regular tuition.— St. George News

Parents seeking options for their kids as start of school nears

With the global COVID-19 pandemic as a backdrop, Tiffany Munns spent months deciding where her children would attend school this fall.The Munns family lives in the Salt Lake City School District and their children have attended city schools. This fall, the school district will provide remote learning with teacher-led instruction and other services such as nutrition and special programs with plans to gradually return to classrooms when COVID-19 infection rates subside.After a lot of time spent researching options, the family’s sons — one a senior and the other a freshman — will remain at Highland High School, where they both play football.Their daughter Lucy, who starts seventh grade this fall, will attend Granite School District’s Wasatch Junior High, which is offering traditional in-person instruction.— Marjorie Cortez, KSL

CDC surprised by Trump's statement it could deploy teams to schools

Leaders at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were blindsided this week when President Donald Trump announced that the agency could deploy teams to assist schools with safely reopening in the fall, a senior CDC official told CNN."My administration also stands ready to deploy CDC teams to support schools that are opening and schools that need help in safety and in order to safely reopen," Trump said on Tuesday during a briefing.The announcement left CDC officials scrambling this week to train-up staff to be able to deploy if they are called upon, the senior official said.— CNN
