PROVIDENCE, Cache County — Cache County Sheriff's investigators are continuing to search for clarifying details regarding what they have called a domestic violence incident and murder-suicide that began late Friday night.

Heidi Bentley, 38, called police at 11:45 p.m., right before dispatchers heard possible gunshots. Officials from the sheriff's office identified the suspect in the shooting as ex-husband Matthew Bentley, 38, who had fled the scene when officers arrived at the apartment complex. Officials later found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

In the past few weeks, law enforcement has responded to calls between both parties, Cache County Sheriff D. Chad Jensen wrote in a statement. Investigators have yet to determine a motive and are still actively working this case.

"Part of the investigation entails working with the medical examiner’s office to determine the cause of death and toxicology reports," wrote Jensesn.

Heidi Bentley's family released a statement thanking those who are involved in the investigation, and asking for privacy as they mourn.

"At this time, we would like to express our deep gratitude to the Cache County Sheriff’s Office, Cache County Attorney Victim Services along with all the other agencies that have worked on this tragic event as it unfolded," read the statement. "We are also grateful to the community who mourn with us during this difficult time. "

A GoFundMe account has been created to support Heidi Bentley's children.
