PROVO — Everyone knows dogs are great friends to their humans. But their loyalty extends to their fellow furry friends.

Two dogs, Elsa and Ding Dong, had escaped from their home on Thursday and decided to go on an adventure. They ended up in the backyard of 1100 N. 850 West in Provo when Elsa fell 8 feet into an open root cellar, said Provo Fire Department Captain Sam Armstrong.

Ding Dong did not run to the streets Lassie-style to alert the neighborhood. Instead, he patiently waited by his friend— which was enough for the homeowner to see him and call Provo Police Department Animal Control.

As animal control and fire crews responded to the scene, Armstrong said Ding Dong did not extend any friendship at first but eventually warmed up to officers who worked to save Elsa and were willing to give a few head rubs.

"Ding Dong was awesome," Armstrong said and added that he and the dog became friends by the end of the rescue.

With temperatures reaching 97 degrees Thursday, Elsa was in need of water throughout the rescue mission. After about 10 minutes, she was reunited with her loyal friend without any injuries. Armstrong confirmed animal control was able to reunite the dogs with their family.

"It is unknown how long the dog was in the root cellar but it was touching to see that (her) friend wouldn't leave (her)," read a Facebook post from Provo Fire and Rescue.
