A new study by consumer and media research firm Scarborough Research shows text messaging rates in Salt Lake City are among the highest in the country.

More than half of Salt Lake residents use their cell phone for texting. That's tied for second in the nation. Salt Lake's percentage tied with Dallas and Memphis, Tenn.

Most of those people sending the text messages are young people.

Sally Robinson sees students sending messages all the time at the high school where she works. "They don't even have to look at their phones to text, and they just do it like crazy," she said.

Researchers say 55 percent of Salt Lake residents send text messages, and 49 percent use their cell phones to take and send pictures. But only 7 percent access the Internet through their phones.

The national average for text-messaging use is 48 percent. El Paso is the top U.S. city for text messaging.
