What an unbelievable and improbable finish. Junior backup kicker Jaron Bentrude had missed two PAT's and had one blocked. But with just seconds on the clock and the game on the line, the coaches sent him out to try to win the game with a 22 yard field goal. Unlike his other attempts this one sailed through the uprights and gave Juan Diego their first 3A state title and an undefeated season. A great story of redemption and an unbelievable start to the day.

On the kickoff, Hurricane tried to pull off a Cal-Stanford type kickoff return, but it wasn't to be. What did happen was a penalty was called. Since you can't end the game on a penalty, Hurricane had one last shot to get the ball into the end zone. Hurricane threw the ball up and it fell incomplete. Juan Diego is you 3A state champion.

I said earlier that the Tigers need to get Dotson going and they do just that. I also mentioned how important it would be for Hurricane to score on their first drive. Now we have a ball game.

Juan Diego ends the half with a 97 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Lars Gunderson took the kickoff at his 3 yard line and ran right up the middle of the field. He somehow broke several tackles, spun free, and took off all the way for 6. The extra point is no good. A devastating play for the Tigers who had taken some of the momentum.

You have to credit the Soaring Eagle defense for holding the Tigers to a field goal. With a Touchdown Hurricane could have taken a halftime lead after Juan Diego has dominated the first half.
