The state senator who once said, "This baby is ... a dark, ugly thing" is in the running to be the gatekeeper in the Utah Senate.
If West Jordan Sen. Chris Buttars becomes the chairman of the Senate Rules Committee, he will decide what bills live or die.
Four other senators are in the running to sit atop the committee. Only one has more seniority.
The decision about the committee chairman will be made by Senate President-elect Michael Waddoups.
