HOYTSVILLE, Summit County — A motorcyclist is dead after crashing on I-80 near Hoytsville Saturday afternoon, officials said.

The 43-year-old man was speeding eastbound on a Harley Davidson at 3:30 p.m., according to the Utah Department of Public Safety. He lost control while driving on a bend in the roadway and crashed in the median.

Several witnesses stopped to help the man but he died on the scene, officials said. He was not wearing a helmet, according to witnesses.

On Monday, DPS officials identified the motorcyclist as Darin Williams, of Layton.

I-80 was shut down for an hour while a medical helicopter responded to the accident, according to a DPS statement. Traffic later opened back up with steady delays while Utah Highway Patrol investigated the crash site with a drone. All directions fully reopened at 7:30 p.m.

The DPS reported 47 motorcyclists were killed on Utah roads in 2019, a 24% increase from the year before.

"We ask all drivers to be more aware of their surroundings as motorcycle season is in full swing and we urge cyclists to take the steps to keep themselves safe on the roadway too by wearing safety equipment and holding proper motorcycle endorsements," read the statement.
