Megan Faulkner Brown was in denial. It was hard not to be. The world was changing by the minute — and all of it was bad for her business. Brown’s gourmet bakery, The Sweet Tooth Fairy, thrives on events — birthdays, company gatherings, weddings, graduations, etc. Practically overnight, the coronavirus pandemic put an end to all those celebrations. That left Brown and her business in a tough spot. The last three months have been a hectic time for business owners across Utah. Some have had to lay off employees or close shop entirely, while others have even seen their businesses thrive. Utah’s economic recovery hinges on smart planning and strong public safety, panel says

After being one of the most vibrant economies in the country for years, the Beehive State is now working to regain some of the momentum lost due to the overwhelming effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now that most of the state is slowly beginning to reestablish some of its former footing as businesses reopen and rehire furloughed employees, the question many state leaders face is how to do so in a responsible manner. With much of Utah in yellow low-risk status, there is a push from some to move ahead to the green or “new normal” risk phase. Disney plans to reopen California theme parks in July

Disney is proposing to reopen its Southern California theme parks in mid-July after what will be a four-month closure due to the coronavirus, the company said on Wednesday. Disney Parks, Experiences and Products said in a statement that the goal is to reopen Disneyland and Disney California Adventure on July 17. A nearby Disney-themed shopping area would reopen on July 9. Advance reservations will be required for theme park visitors and capacity will be limited, the statement said. Events that draw large crowds, such as parades and nighttime spectaculars, won't return immediately and Disney characters will be in the parks but not available to meet with visitors, the statement said. — Associated Press

Utah sees 305 new cases of COVID-19, 1 new death

After three days of decreasing numbers of new COVID-19 cases, Utah saw a higher number of new cases Wednesday. Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases has increased by 305 from Tuesday, with one new reported death, according to the Utah Department of Health. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday saw 268, 256 and 237 new cases, respectively. — Jacob Klopfenstein, KSL.com

Jon Huntsman Jr. tests positive for COVID-19

Utah gubernatorial candidate Jon Huntsman Jr. has tested positive for COVID-19. “After a second try, test results came back positive for Covid-19,” the former governor said in a tweet Wednesday. “Have been experiencing classic symptoms..like so many others, my goal is to keep my family safe.” — Jacob Klopfenstein, KSL.com

Utah medical professionals concerned over drop in ER visits

There’s a major medical concern from some Utah hospitals that people are waiting too long to get critical care. As a result, many patients are coming into emergency rooms in worse conditions, which is putting their life more at risk. MountainStar health care system's 11 hospitals experienced about a 30% drop in ER visits. — Dan Rascon, KSL TV

Stimulus scams are spiking, consumer protection experts say

AARP’s director of Fraud Prevention Programs Kathy Stokes said fraud around stimulus payments is rampant. She said they’ve seen scammers sending texts pretending to be from the bank, calling pretending to be from the IRS, or canvassing the country with bogus checks, all in an effort to steal your identity, and your money. 19 states see rising coronavirus cases

Health experts have long warned about a second peak in Covid-19, and now a rise in cases has pushed Arizona to tell its hospitals to activate emergency plans. Arizona is one of the 19 states with the trend of new coronavirus cases still increasing. While 24 are trending downward, seven states' trends are holding steady. Nationally more than 1.9 million people have been infected by the virus and more than 112,000 have died, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. — CNN

Virus pummels global economy, jobs - even without 2nd wave

The virus crisis has triggered the worst global recession in nearly a century — and the pain is not over yet even if there is no second wave of infections, an international economic report warned Wednesday. Hundreds of millions of people have lost their jobs, and the crisis is hitting the poor and young people the hardest, worsening inequalities, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development said in its latest analysis of global economic data. “It is probably the most uncertain and dramatic outlook since the creation of the OECD,” Secretary General Angel Gurria said. “We cannot make projections as as we normally do.” — Associated Press
