1. Peaceful protests take dangerous turn in Salt Lake City

Protesters dispersed shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday night after protests calling for justice in the death of George Floyd, a black man from Minnesota, started out peaceably in Salt Lake City Saturday morning but escalated by Saturday evening.

2. Salt Lake mayor praises police as streets return to ‘quiet and calm’ after riot

The mayor praised police for how they handled the nearly 11 hours of demonstrations with a calculated response to let protesters vent their anger without police presence for a while, and acting with restraint when violence erupted.

3. Bystanders help rescue family out of river in Logan Canyon

Rescue crews called upon bystanders to help retrieve a mother and her four kids from their vehicle, which was stuck the river in Logan Canyon.

4. 'Heartbreaking on a lot of levels': Orem High softball field tagged with racist, homophobic graffiti

Alpine School District officials confirmed that the Tigers’ softball field was tagged with graffiti sometime in the overnight hours of Friday night and Saturday morning.

5. 264 new coronavirus cases in Utah Sunday, health department says

The Utah Department of Health is reporting 264 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the state Sunday, and one new death from the disease.

That brings Utah's total confirmed case count to 9,797, up from 9,533 cases the day before. Of those cases, 6,137 are estimated to have recovered, meaning they were diagnosed more than three weeks ago and did not die.

Across the Beehive State, Utah leaders decried violence caused by some protests — but unilaterally condemned racism, discrimination and the social injustices against which most protestors were fighting in cities across the country — including Salt Lake City — following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

2. Michael Jordan: 'Truly pained and plain angry'

Michael Jordan is “deeply saddened, truly pained and plain angry.”

With protesters taking to the streets across the United States again Sunday, Jordan released a statement on George Floyd and the killings of black people at the hands of police.

3. Eli Tomac cruises in 1st of 7 races marking Supercross' return at Rice-Eccles Stadium

Eli Tomac came from behind to cruise to a victory in the professional sports’ return to Utah in Sunday’s Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series.

Tomac topped second-placed Cooper Webb by 3.771 seconds in the first of seven rounds that will conclude the supercross season that was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Each race will be held at Rice-Eccles Stadium, with rotating tracks.

4. Vikings finally earn first win to close out pool play at UPG Last Chance tournament

A day after meeting for the first time in over two months — yes, Pleasant Grove baseball coach Darrin Henry didn’t hold a single of practice prior to Friday, when they lost to Syracuse in the tournament opener — the Vikings finally got their first win of the tournament.

5. MLS players submit proposal for summer tournament to league, owners

Major League Soccer may have taken a significant step toward resuming play Sunday with a proposal by the MLS Players’ Association that ratifies the new collective bargaining agreement for another year and paves the way for participation in a mid-summer tournament in Orlando that would signal the season’s reboot from the coronavirus pandemic.
