Trump says he's close to a deal with Congress on virus aid

The Trump administration and Congress are nearing an agreement on an aid package of up to $450 billion to boost a small-business loan program that has run out of money and add funds for hospitals and COVID-19 testing. Senior missionary from Utah dies from coronavirus

A Willard resident serving as a senior missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints died due to complications from COVID-19. Allen Dee Pace, 68, was diagnosed with the virus in April after becoming sick in mid-March, according to church spokesman Daniel Woodruff. Shortly after becoming ill, Allen Pace went into the care of his wife and daughter in a nearby state; he died Saturday. — Jen Riess, KSL.com

Utah tops 3,000 total COVID-19 cases in Sunday numbers

The Utah Department of Health reported 138 new cases of COVID-19 Sunday and two new deaths, bringing the state's total to 3,069 positive cases since the pandemic began. Previously, there were 2,931 cases reported in Utah. Health department spokesman Tom Hudachko said the deaths were both Salt Lake County residents over age 85 with underlying medical conditions. One was a man and one a woman, Hudachko said, and they were both living in a long-term care facility before being hospitalized. — Graham Dudley, KSL.com

Trans-Jordan Landfill to reopen to public

Officials Sunday announced the Trans-Jordan Landfill will reopen to the public on Monday April, 20. “We feel that we have had a chance to get our feet under us so we can now keep both residents and employees safe, during this pandemic while running a safe and efficient operation," said Jaren Scott, executive director of the Trans-Jordan Landfill, in a news release. The landfill will only accept credit and debit cards and will enforce 6-feet social distancing throughout the landfill, it said. "We anticipate longer lines and wait times as we control the flow of customers to prevent large groups at any one area of the landfill," the release says. — Graham Dudley, KSL.com

Virus snarls global drug trade

Coronavirus is dealing a gut punch to the illegal drug trade, paralyzing economies, closing borders and severing supply chains in China that traffickers rely on for the chemicals to make such profitable drugs as methamphetamine and fentanyl. One of the main suppliers that shut down is in Wuhan, the epicenter of the global outbreak. Associated Press interviews with nearly two dozen law enforcement officials and trafficking experts found Mexican and Colombian cartels are still plying their trade as evidenced by recent drug seizures but the lockdowns that have turned cities into ghost towns are disrupting everything from production to transport to sales. — Associated Press

Saturday's numbers from the Utah Department of Health show 126 new cases of COVID-19 and two new coronavirus-related deaths.

Lady Gaga, Stevie Wonder, Lizzo, Shawn Mendes and others sang classic songs brimmed with messages of hope and change during a TV special aimed at fighting the coronavirus.

Hundreds of people gathered on the lawn at Washington Square on Saturday — some keeping further apart than others — to express their discontent with how the American government is handling the spread of the novel coronavirus and the restrictions that have come along with it.
