SOUTH JORDAN — South Jordan City announced in a news release Wednesday that it is "eliminating water as a source for resident health concerns" after extensive testing.

The announcement comes after residents reported a home water test came back positive for chromium-6 in the Daybreak neighborhood, but city officials say subsequent testing — "30 different elements at 20 sites over two days" — has revealed no abnormalities.

"Our water in South Jordan is safe to use and drink," city spokesperson Rachael Van Cleave said.

The city said third-party partners are still waiting for their test results, but that the city "fully expects" them to reach the same conclusion.

After some residents developed symptoms including rashes and itching, water was considered a possible culprit. Chromium-6 has been linked to skin irritation and cancer, and was spotlighted in the movie "Erin Brockovich" as an insidious pollutant.

But the city says its tests, which cost more than $11,000, revealed no dangers.

“We partnered with state and county organizations to ensure our water is safe,” Van Cleave said. “Our next step is working with those partners to determine a cause for what’s going on with our residents.”

The city encourages residents to report symptoms and review the test results on its website.
