SALT LAKE CITY — Charges were filed Friday against the biological parents of a baby who police say was kidnapped from her grandparents’ home on Wednesday.

Gabriel Brandon Caro, 19, and Jasmine Alvarez, 21, were each charged in 3rd District Court with one count of child kidnapping, a first-degree felony, and one count of burglary, a second-degree felony. Caro also faces a misdemeanor charge of violation of a protective order.

An Amber Alert was issued Wednesday for 3-month-old Khaliyah Alvarez-Caro after police were called to her grandparents’ home in South Salt Lake. According to court records, the grandparents were awarded legal guardianship of their granddaughter in July.

The baby and her mother were found safe early Thursday in Lander, Wyoming.

Caro told investigators he snuck into the grandparents’ home at South Parc Townhomes, 452 E. 2250 South, through a basement window, according to charging documents. He then let Alvarez in through the front door, the charges say.

Caro reportedly took the baby from an upstairs bedroom and gave the infant to Alvarez, who went to join other family members in a waiting car.

A protective order was in place at the time to restrict Caro from contacting Alvarez, according to charging documents.

Troopers from the Wyoming Highway Patrol found Alvarez and the baby about 1:45 a.m. Thursday. Caro was found in downtown Salt Lake City and arrested, police said.

Troopers also arrested Naomi S. Yellowbear for investigation of custodial interference.

Both Caro and Alvarez are homeless and have a long history of drug abuse and domestic violence, according to South Salt Lake police detective Gary Keller.
