LAKE POINT, Tooele County — Lake Point residents are looking for volunteers this morning to help fill and lay sandbags to prevent possible mudslides in the aftermath of the Green Ravine Fire.
The volunteers will be filling sandbags at the intersection of Sheep Rock Trail and Lakeshore Drive and laying them at the Sheep Rock Trail underpass.
Tooele County emergency services director Bucky Whitehouse said the community is trying to be prepared for “any eventuality.”
“This particular mountain range is rather steep, and we figure that if we see half an inch of rain or more in 30 minutes, that we will have ash and/or mud that will slide,” Whitehouse said. “Right now they are mobilizing their neighborhood and they are actively taking volunteers for the sandbagging operations that are going on as they get prepared for any kind of mud or debris flows that are coming off the Green Ravine … canyon area.”
The KSL forecast calls for a 20% chance of rain in Tooele County on Tuesday.
The volunteers will be filling sandbags until noon Saturday. More information and a map of the staging area can be found on Facebook.
