AMERICAN FORK — A cyclist suffered significant injuries Saturday after a UTV collided with a group of cyclists while on the Alpine Loop.

A side-by-side UTV was driving up Alpine Loop when it collided with a group of cyclists traveling downhill on the same roadway, Utah Highway Patrol said in a statement. Witnesses later reported that the vehicle was driving aggressively, cutting corners and accelerating rapidly around turns troopers said.

The UTV rounded a curve with limited visibility near the Cascade Springs turnoff, according to Utah Highway Patrol. The first cyclist was able to avoid getting hit but the second cyclist hit the side of the UTV on the driver’s side, connecting with the mirror.

Though the cyclist was wearing a helmet, the person suffered significant head, back and neck injuries and was taken to a hospital by medical helicopter in critical condition, troopers said. The roadway was approximately 16 feet wide from shoulder to shoulder and the speed limit was 20 mph.

Preliminary investigations found evidence the UTV was on the wrong side of the roadway when it went around the curve, troopers said.
