OGDEN, Utah (AP) — A northern Utah highway popular with outdoor recreation enthusiasts is fully reopening after being closed this year two weeks later than is normal because of accumulated snow.
The Department of Transportation said the Monte Cristo Highway, also known as State Route 39, was set to reopen at midnight Thursday in time for use this weekend.
A 19-mile section had been closed between near Huntsville and near Woodruff.
That section of the highway is expected to remain open until late fall, with other sections open all year.
The department says it'd be prohibitively costly to keep the entire highway open all year.
Several highways across the state are still closed, including state Route 150, also known as the Mirror Lake Highway, and Guardsman Pass Road at the top of Big Cottonwood Canyon, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.
Guardsman Pass Road will likely reopen next week, according to UDOT Spokesman John Gleason. UDOT crews plowed the Salt Lake County side of the road leading up to the pass, but the Wasatch County side has not yet been plowed, Gleason said.
Crews reported 20-foot snow drifts still present at the pass, Gleason said.
Mirror Lake Highway is expected to reopen in late June, Gleason said. UDOT crews will be plowing the road on June 17, and it will take them about a week to clear the road, he added.
A portion of state Route 92, also known as the Alpine Loop Road, remains closed as of Friday, according to UDOT's website. The closure starts near the Mutual Dell Campsite/Pine Hollow area and continues to near the Aspen Grove area, the agency said.
State Route 153 in Beaver County also remains closed between Eagle Point Ski Resort and the town of Junction, according to the UDOT website.
