RIVERTON — Multiple agencies received a report of a silver SUV driving erratically prior to a multiple-vehicle crash that left a person seriously injured late Friday morning, police said.

Officers responded to a crash on the southbound side of the highway at 12600 South shortly before 11:45 a.m. after a silver SUV slammed into the back of another vehicle stopped at a right light, Unified police detective Ken Hansen said.

The collision caused a chain reaction involving five total vehicles.

"The (SUV) that collided with the vehicles that were stopped did not apparently attempt to stop, they just hit them at full speed," Hansen said.

A male passenger in one of the vehicles that was hit was taken to a hospital in critical condition, but has since been updated to serious condition, Hansen added. Three others suffered minor injuries and were listed in fair condition.

West Valley and South Jordan police had received reports of an erratic driver prior to the crash, Hansen said. However, he said officers were unable to locate the vehicle before the crash.

"(The vehicle) was reported as being all over the road," Hansen said.

The crash remains under investigation. However, the driver of the silver SUV, a woman in her 40s or 50s, was taken to Unified police's Riverton precinct to be tested "for possible impairment," Hansen said. He added it's also possible the driver was having a medical episode.

Witnesses who saw the silver SUV recorded portions of the vehicle driving prior to the crash, which Unified police was going to review, Hansen said.

The crash closed southbound lanes of Bangerter Highway for several hours until it was reopened shortly before 4 p.m.
