SOUTH JORDAN — A boy suffered critical injuries after being ejected from a car in a crash at the intersection of Bangerter Highway and 11400 South.

The 6-year-old boy was taken by medical helicopter to Primary Children's Hospital with life-threatening injuries, South Jordan police Lt. Matthew Pennington said in an emailed statement. He was still in critical condition as of 9 p.m. Thursday.

At about 4 p.m. Thursday, a Toyota Corolla was turning left on a red light and was hit by a vehicle heading south, Pennington said. The southbound car, which was driven by an off-duty Unified police officer, had the right-of-way, he said.

The driver of the Corolla, a 46-year-old woman, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The UPD officer in the southbound car also had minor injuries and was treated at the crash scene. Only two cars were involved in the crash.

Law enforcement officials were still investigating the crash and had not yet determined whether the boy was wearing a seatbelt or was in a carseat, according to Pennington.

He said the left turn at the intersection had been restricted due to ongoing road construction.

"The South Jordan Police received numerous complaints about the violations of the restricted left turn at the intersection and had been conducting targeted enforcement throughout the day prior to the accident," Pennington said in the statement. "We would like to remind drivers to please be observant and obey all traffic control devices and signs, especially in construction zones and during peak commuting hours."

Earlier Thursday, all eastbound and westbound lanes at the intersection were closed, Utah Department of Transportation officials said on Twitter. Southbound lanes of Bangerter were closed at 10400 South, UDOT officials said. All the lanes had been reopened as of 9:20 p.m.

Note: South Jordan police initially said the UPD officer was making the left turn, but later confirmed he was driving the southbound car.
