SALT LAKE CITY — The Senate passed SB27 quickly Monday afternoon, amending the laws on domestic violence, dating violence and stalking that may have saved a Sandy woman and her son.

Memorez Rackley and her son, Jase, were gunned down by a man she had once dated, Jeremy Patterson, on June 6 on a Sandy street. Patterson then took his own life.

SB27 amends the law to expand the ability to obtain a proctective order to those who have or had a relationship with a suspect but never cohabited.

The sponsor of the bill, Sen. Todd Weiler, R-Woods Cross, explained that the law is restrictive and very specific by design, because obtaining a protective order against someone essentially strips him or her of their Second Amendment rights.

The Senate suspended the usual three-reading requirements and sent the bill to the House with a unanimous vote.
