Jed Boal ReportingMore than 300-thousand Utahns plan to get out of town for the Labor Day holiday weekend. There are new rules for the Express Lanes, more troopers on the look-out for drunken drivers and some construction projects that could slow you down if you're headed south.
We've received several calls from people on I-80 right before Evanston that are in 20 mile traffic back ups. They describe it as a parking lot.
UDOT tells us road construction on the Wyoming side of the border has merged traffic into one lane. Drivers headed to places like Bear Lake or Evanston will find it slow going.
There are new rules for the Express Lanes on 38 miles of I-15 from 600 North in Salt Lake to University Parkway in Orem. Carpoolers and a limited number of drivers who pay 50-dollars a month for the privilege can use the lanes, but you can only enter and exit at the broken white line.
Trooper Bryan Gardner/Utah Highway Patrol: "With the double white line, you can't go in and out whenever you want, you have to leave appropriately just like an exit on the freeway."
The rules are easy to follow and State Troopers will start to get tougher with enforcement.
Gas prices have dipped in the last week or two, but they're still higher than they were a year ago at this time. AAA expects that will keep people closer to home.
If you're headed to Southern Utah, keep these closures in mind.
Six miles of I-15 in Nephi will be down to one lane between exits 222 and 228. Traffic in that area will be diverted to the southbound side, with one lane going in each direction The northbound on ramp at exit 222 will be closed, as well as the northbound off ramp at exit 225.
Also, US Highway 6 will go down to one lane in alternating directions about 12 miles north of Green River.
On I-15 between Scipio and the Juab county line, traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction.
