MIDVALE — Police arrested a man in connection with a stabbing in Springville, after he barricaded himself in a Midvale home on Sunday morning.

Andrew Holloway, 33, had fled the scene of a stabbing in Springville that took place around 6:10 a.m. Sunday, police said. Around 9:15 a.m., he was refusing to come out of a home near 8200 S. 245 West in Midvale after police found a car he was driving near the home.

By about 2 p.m., Holloway had come out of the home and was taken into custody, Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera said.

Police had to use "tactical devices" to encourage Holloway to come out of the home, Rivera said. Some of his family members also helped police negotiate with Holloway by phone.

He eventually came out of the home safely, and his only injury was a dog bite from a K9 unit on the scene, Rivera said.

"Whenever we can apprehend somebody safely, that makes us feel good about our tactics, and our main goal is to keep the community safe, so we’re very happy that we were able to get him out safe," she said.

Earlier Sunday, police responded to a home in Springville at about 6:10 a.m., where they found a man with serious stab wounds to his face, head and chest, Springville Police Lt. Warren Foster said. He said the man's injuries were not life threatening, but he had been transported to a hospital.

The man who was stabbed is the new boyfriend of an ex-girlfriend of Holloway's, Foster said. He said Holloway had broken into the home where the ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend were staying, and a fight ensued.

Holloway fled the scene in a black Volkswagen Passat before police arrived at the Springville home, Foster said.

Holloway and the ex-girlfriend have a child together, but the child was with another family member away from the home when the stabbing took place, Foster said.

The night before the stabbing, at about 10:45, Holloway saw the ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend in a car in Springville, and a brief vehicle chase took place, Foster said. The ex-girlfriend and new boyfriend ran into their home and called police. Police could not find Holloway Saturday night.

Later, the tires had been slashed and a window broken on the new boyfriend's truck, according to Foster.

On Sunday, Unified police found the Passat they believe Holloway was driving near 8200 S. 245 West around 9:15 a.m., according Unified Police Lt. Chuck Malm.

The vehicle was unoccupied but still warm when officers found it, so they believed Holloway was still in the area, he said.

Police were setting up containment operations in the area late Sunday morning to try to find the man after they got a tip that Holloway may have been in a house nearby. A SWAT crew was on scene just before 12 p.m. Sunday.

A nearby church was put on lockdown, and people living in the area were asked to shelter in place in their homes, Malm said.
