PROVO — A climber was seriously injured when he fell about 30 feet near Stewart Falls Sunday morning.
The Utah County Sheriff's Office received a call around 11:10 a.m. stating that a 35-year-old man climbing near Stewart Falls above Sundance fell at least 30 feet, according to Sgt. Spencer Cannon. The caller said the climber appeared to be seriously injured with a possible broken leg and broken wrist.
Emergency crews initially called for a medical helicopter but then canceled it because they were able to carry the man out.
"No head injuries, so that's a good thing," Cannon said, adding that it appeared that the man had injuries to his lower leg. "It doesn't look right now like there's anything that's going to be life-threatening."
Cannon did not know if the man was wearing protective gear, but pointed out that Stewart Falls is not a technical climbing destination.
"The dangerous thing about Stewart Falls is that it's not terribly difficult to climb up them, but it's more risky than people evaluate sometimes. And that's how we end up with injuries like this," Cannon said.
